Dark Shadows Episode 504 - 5/30/68

Vick comforts Liz while she worries about Carolyn.

Carolyn comes to, and realizes she's alone. She tries to leave but cannot open the door.

Liz tells Vicki that she thinks Carolyn is dead. The phone rings and hears they've apprehended the kidnapper, but there's no sign of Carolyn. Vicki asks where he was caught, and she says near the old house. Vicki says she may be nearby. Liz says she'll plead for the sheriff to release him, in the hope that he'll lead them to Carolyn. Vicki says they won't let him go, but agrees to go with her to town.

Carolyn tries to remember what happened before she was knocked out. She thinks that the man may have gone for food. She pounds on the door and screams.

Adam sits in a jail cell, chained up as he was in the basement. A deputy brings Liz and Vicki in to see him. The deputy says he had to rough him up. Liz calls him Adam, and he recognizes her. The deputy taunts him, and Liz tells him to stop. The deputy reluctantly complies with Liz' demands.

Vicki notices that the man seems calmer. Liz asks Adam to speak to her. She says he can trust her and Vicki. He says if he tells her where Carolyn is, she won't let anything bad happen to him. They promise to help him as friends. Adam says, "friend," and then "food." Vicki says he may not know more than a few words. They go to leave, and Adam reaches out to them. Vicki says he looks as though he wants to help Liz. They leave the cell.

Carolyn moans about being trapped, concerned she'll die in the cellar.

In his cell, Adam cries out for a friend.

Back at Collinwood, Vicki tells Liz that Adam seemed like a very young child. Liz tells her she's going to share something that she can't tell anyone. She says she believes Barnabas is somehow connected to Adam. She thinks he knows more about Adam than he's willing to admit. She says when she saw him in the woods, he said one word—"Barnabas." She then says that Willie had previously delivered a note from Barnabas saying he was leaving to go to England, and asking that she be kind to a relative who was coming to stay—a nephew named Adam. She says that Barnabas never went to England, and out of nowhere this man Adam appeared. Vicki suggests it's a coincidence.

Outside the drawing room, Cassandra hears this and interrupts them. She asks if there's anything she can do while they await word on Carolyn. Liz goes upstairs to her room. Cassandra says Mrs. Johnson told her they captured the kidnapper. Cassandra asks about Adam, and Vicki asks why she's so interested.

Cassandra asks why Vicki is so hostile towards her. Cassandra says she understands why the family will take time to accept her, but she doesn't understand why Vicki didn't like her from the first time she saw her. She asks if she reminds her of someone she doesn't like. Vicki says she does remind her of someone she knew. Cassandra cries and tells her it's not fair, as she storms out of the room.

Cassandra starts upstairs and looks back to the drawing room, smiling.

Liz comes downstairs and finds Vicki in the drawing room. She explains that she couldn't sleep. Vicki says that she thinks she made a mistake about Cassandra. Vicki says she may have been wrong not to trust her. She says Cassandra accused her of disliking her, and left in tears. Liz says she doesn't think she was wrong not to trust her. She says that she doesn't trust her either.

The deputy goes in to see Adam, and taunt him further. He pulls his gun and Adam recoils. The deputy enters his cell and begins to beat Adam with his nightstick. Adam overpowers him.

Outside, another deputy hears the struggle, and enters the cell to find the first one unconscious, and the bars on the window stretched open. Adam is nowhere to be found.

Our thoughts

John: Wouldn't you think Carolyn would look around the cellar for tools she could use to find a way out? Poor little rich girl...

Christine: That may be the strongest, most well-constructed door we've seen yet on the show, as she's able to tug on it without making the whole wall move. She could probably stack up a bunch of boxes and pallets and claw her way through the dilapidated ceiling.

John: Deputy dog thought that he could knock some sense into Adam. Was he not aware that it took twenty men to subdue him originally?

Christine: He certainly got what was coming to him. It looked like Lara Parker may have jumped the gun on her cue when the door was opened behind Liz and Vicki, causing Liz to turn to see who was entering the scene. She later emerged from the same door.

John: Adam would have had a hard time fitting through the window if there were no bars... I don't know how he would have managed to squeeze through even with them spread open.

Christine: That was surprising. I was expecting to see a huge hole in the brick. Why didn't he just break out in the first place? I imagine he'll be on his way back to his friend Carolyn. I wonder if Willie will manage to find her and tell her the dream by tomorrow's episode, or if we'll have to wait until next week for the dream curse to continue.

Dark Shadows Episode 503 - 5/29/68

Amazon Prime members can stream today's episode free!

Julia finds Willie sitting in a chair by the fire in the old house. He says he thought she might have been Carolyn. She says Barnabas needs him to help search for Adam and Carolyn. She realizes Willie has had the dream. She explains it's part of a dream curse, and unless it is stopped, Barnabas will die.

Willie describes his dream to Julia. She asks what was behind the last door, and he describes something snarling behind the door. He then hears dogs outside and is frightened. Julia tells him those are just the police dogs out looking for Carolyn. Willie continues with his description of the dream, saying he woke up, but before he opened the door.

He starts to leave to look for Carolyn, and she tells him he cannot. If he does, the curse will continue. She says she might be able to help him forget the dream. She takes her magic medallion out of her purse, and uses it to hypnotize him. He says he can see where Carolyn is, and when Julia asks where, he says she's under the ground.

Carolyn asks Adam why he took her where he did. She says it looks like an underground root cellar. Adam stares at her while she begs him to let her go. She sits down, crying, which upsets Adam. He seems confused, and when he sits on the bench, she picks up a rock and goes to hit him with it. He turns in time to stop her.

Julia asks if he still sees Carolyn, and he says no. He says he sees the light. She tells him that when she snaps her fingers, he will awaken, having forgotten all about the dream. She snaps her fingers and Willie asks what they were talking about. She asks him how he feels, and he says he feels the same. He says he's scared to death of the dream. She is shocked, realizing that her hypnotism didn't work, She asks if he remembers seeing her, and he does not. He asks where he said that she was, and Julia says he said that he saw Carolyn under the ground. He thinks this means that she's dead.

Carolyn begs Adam not to kill her. He strokes her hair, and she realizes that he doesn't want to hurt her. She takes his hand and brings it to her hair. He continues stroking it, and says she wants them to be friends. Adam says friend, and smiles.

She says she'll protect him, and he has to protect her. He then says music, and she begs him to bring her back to Collinwood. She says they need food, and Ada says, "food." Adam opens the door and and Carolyn starts to leave, he grabs her and drops her to the floor, where she hits her head on a rock. He cries, realizing he hurt his friend. He leaves her inside, goes out and places a large rock in front of the door.

There's a knock at the door of the old house, and it's the sheriff. He wants to see Barnabas, and when they say he's not there, he asks to speak to Willie. The sheriff says they both spend enough time at the old house that they may know what's going on. He points out that Liz saw him coming from the old house. He then mentions that the maniac seemed to know Barnabas—he spoke his name. Julia says she's mystified by that. The sheriff asks Willie if he knows anything about the man, and Willie says no.

The sheriff asks why Willie is so nervous, and Julia interrupts him to say Willie is upset about a dream. Willie looks outside as the dogs bark, and sees Adam. The sheriff sees him and goes outside, where he shoots at Adam.

The sheriff returns to tell Julia and Willie that they've apprehended the maniac. He says it took 20 men to subdue him. The sheriff asks why the man came back to the old house. Willie and Julia deny any knowledge of the man. The sheriff says he saw the way the man looked at them, and recognized both of them. Julia dares him to prove that he knows them. The sheriff leaves, and Willie and Julia argue about Adam. Willie says that Carolyn has got to be alone, and that they need to find her.

Carolyn lies unconscious in the room where Adam left her.

Our thoughts

John: How would Adam know to barricade Carolyn inside? That's a pretty advanced scenario for a child to consider.

Christine: It doesn't seem to be a very nice way to treat a friend. We've got a thrilling, new root cellar set, which probably means Carolyn will be holed up there awhile.

John: It took twenty men to subdue Adam? Are there that many deputies in Collinsport? Given Adam's limited vocabulary, Barnabas is definitely going to be a person of interest: Barnabas, Music, Food, and Friend.

Christine: Will he start rattling off Dr. Lang's final message on tape once they get him to talk? I wonder what Sheriff Patterson would make of that.

John: What was Julia thinking, daring the sheriff to prove that Adam knows them? All he would have to do is parade the three of them by Adam's cell and he would clearly recognize them all!

Christine: That was pretty dumb, and uncharacteristic of Julia. His desire to strangle Willie alone proves that he knows them. Vince O'Brien makes his second appearance as Sheriff Patterson after first appearing in the role in Episode 328. We last saw Sheriff Patterson investigating the death of Dr. Woodard in Episode 342.

Dark Shadows Episode 502 - 5/28/68

Amazon Prime members can stream today's episode free!

Tony arrives at Collinwood and says he can't believe Carolyn was abducted. Liz says the man who took her is a giant, and only seems to speak a few words. She says he's a monster, and not human.

Adam carries Carolyn to the old house. Willie sees him from inside the house, and grabs his rifle.

Willie steps outside and tells Adam to put Carolyn down or he'll shoot him. Adam does. He then grabs the gun from Willie and knocks him out. He takes Willie's matches, picks Carolyn up and carries her away in the woods.

Liz and Tony walk through the woods to the old house. Liz says she thinks the old house is involved. The come across Willie, who says the man was there, and he had Carolyn. Willie tells Tony that he should get a gun because Adam is strong. Tony goes to search for him, and Liz stays with Willie. She says Willie knows a lot, and she asks why he called the monster Adam. Willie realizes what he did.

He denies it, saying she must have misunderstood him. He says he's preoccupied with a dream. She demands that he tell him who Adam is. Willie says he doesn't know who the man is.

Adam carries Carolyn's unconscious body to a shack, and sets her down on a table. He strokes her hair and she slowly comes to. She sits up and begs for him to let her go. He lets go of her, and she says he doesn't want to hurt her. She asks why he doesn't talk. He smiles at her and says, "if both live."

She asks if he's going to kill her, and he says, "kill." She asks why he hates her and starts to cry. He also starts to cry, and tells her no.

She gets up to run but he prevents her from running away. He closes the door and she asks him what he wants. He says, "kill Barnabas."

Back at the main house, Liz hears from the police that no one has escaped from an asylum or prison. Tony tells her that he'll stay with her. Liz tells him that Carolyn was home when he called earlier. He assures Liz that Carolyn will be back. He says he doesn't think the man is a kidnapper. He thinks he was being chased, and he took Carolyn as a shield.

Carolyn shivers, and asks how much longer they have to stay. She says she's cold. He gives her matches and she lights a pine cone on fire. Adam is transfixed by the fire until it burns his hand. She says he's like a kid. She apologizes, saying she thought he knew.

Willie sits in a chair, trying not to fall asleep. He tries to stay awake until Barnabas returns, but he fails. There's a knock at the door, and it's Carolyn. Willie realizes she got away, and asks where Adam is. She silently beckons him to follow her. He does, and she leads him to a door.

After going through, she closes and locks it behind him. He hears her recite the curse, and turns to find he's in a room with many doors. He hears Josette's music box, and opens the first door to see the wide-eyed skull. He closes it and moves to the next, where he sees the guillotine. The third door he opens reveals the skeletal bride. Behind the fourth door, he sees a wolf's head. He wakes up screaming in terror.

Our thoughts

John: Why would Adam stop to pick up Willie's matches? Seems like that was pretty forced to setup the burning scene later.

Christine: And how would he know to give them to Carolyn when she said she was cold? Also, why would Carolyn burn a pinecone for warmth when there's a bunch of old pallets behind them?

John: Willie's going to have a lot of explaining to do—to Liz and Barnabas, regarding the man he seems to know as Adam.

Christine: It seems as though the dream may have loosened a few more screws in Willie's head, and he may end up back at Windcliff, unable to explain anything. John Karlen is awesome!

John: Always fun to get back to the dream curse, which took an unexpected turn, cycling from Willie back to Carolyn—meaning there's still a chance for it to pass through Liz and/or Roger on its way to Barnabas. Of course I was disappointed that we didn't get a second view of the spiderweb.

Christine: At least we lost the bat footage. Why is Willie dreaming of a wolf's head? Does he fear taxidermy? Does this portend the coming of a lycanthrope?
