Here, in one panel we have Burke trying to cheer David up and get him to talk, while in the other we have Carolyn trying to cheer Vicki up and get Elizabeth to listen. The paired scenes bring out a whole host of comparisons among the characters. Seeing the all-too perky Vicki succumb to mopeyness makes David's usual glumness the more sympathetic, while David's attempt to stonewall his criminal plan makes Elizabeth's evasiveness the more sinister. Seeing Burke and Carolyn work to get their interlocutors to open up not only makes them more sympathetic than they've ever been, but also makes the two of them seem credible as a potential couple.
